With Diwali approaching, Indian designer Anita Dongre and toy giant Mattel have teamed up to unveil a special edition Barbie in honor of the festival. This limited-edition Diwali Barbie is adorned in a contemporary version of the traditional Indian lehenga, called the “Moonlight Bloom” set. The design features a modern take on the classic outfit, paired with a Rajasthani-inspired waistcoat and intricate nature motifs that reflect Dongre’s signature style.
Anita Dongre, known for dressing international celebrities, described the collaboration as both “fun and fulfilling.” She highlighted that the Diwali Barbie embodies the spirit of the modern, fashion-conscious woman who proudly embraces her Indian roots. Dongre hopes the doll will inspire children around the world to connect with their culture and traditions.
This isn’t the first time Barbie has embraced Indian influences. In the early 1980s, Mattel introduced an Indian Barbie as part of their Dolls of the World collection. More recently, Bollywood star Katrina Kaif had a Barbie modeled after her.
